The rain came and went, but it did nothing to dampen the spirits at Chaverim of Rockland’s annual Safety Day and Fun Fair which took place on Sunday, June 25. The widely popular and heavily attended event took place on the fields of Viola Park.
“Chaverim is such a valuable community resource and partner of our local law enforcement on all levels,” says Legislature Alden Wolfe. “Neighbors helping neighbors – that’s what makes Rockland County great.”
There was a bike registration area for bikes to receive registration from the police department to aid in the recovery of stolen bikes. Free helmets were distributed as well by Bikur Cholim. The helmets were donated once again by Dr. and Mrs. Steven Fessel, who over the years have donated thousands of helmets in order to make safety a priority and encourage Monsey children to wear helmets while out riding their bikes.
The Monsey Fire Department had a fire safety demonstration and also had a truck on hand which raised a huge patriotic flag utilizing the truck’s many stories high cherry picker vehicle all in view of the enthusiastic crowd.
There was an area set aside for seat belt safety information as well as infant and toddler car seat inspections and safety education and awareness presentations which were given by throughout the afternoon by the New York State Police, Rockland County Sheriff, the Town of Ramapo Police Department, Spring Valley Police; Brewer Fire Department, the Coast Guard and Hatzolah of Rockland all of whom came together to ensure that the safety of Monsey’s children comes first.
“It was a massive hit,” said one enthusiastic attendee. “All of my kids enjoyed it.” And what was not to enjoy with the multitude of emergency vehicles available with their doors wide open to facilitate children climbing right inside for hands-on viewing and exploring and balloon rides offered along with helium balloons, prizes, cotton candy and shlush and other free snacks, drinks and ices.
The smooth running of the event was coordinated by Chaverim’s volunteers who put in countless hours of hard work before, during and after the day in their usual fashion displaying their continued unstinting devotion towards the Monsey community.
The focus of the day was on showing children that yes, fun and safety can be combined. This year’s Chaverim Kids Safety Day was co-sponsored by Maple Pharmacy and Rockland Supermarket.
